MUSICALS ARE NOT VERY COOL

Gah!

TC theatre is boring the crap out of me lately.  I get the feeling that everyone’s reloading after the Fringe.  To keep you company while you wait, here’s a fun little article about musical theatre from The Guardian.  There’s a quote in there from The Edge where he says “Most musicals are really pants.” — the Irish are just plain adorable.

SARAH SILVERMAN!
Here’s a nice little Sarah Silverman interview from the good folks at The Guardian.  Oh, and if you don’t absolutely love Sarah Silverman, you can just fuck right off.

ALL BY MYSELF
Interesting.
It seems the infestation of one-person shows at this year’s MN Fringe Festival wasn’t just a local phenomenon.
Over at The Guardian UK, Paul Arendt spits out his take on the solo show. I can’t say I disagree, although I saw some pretty fun solo stuff at this year’s festival (Fotis, SHIFT, and Boom come to mind). But more than once, I did find myself asking “What the hell is up with all the one-person shows”??
Maybe next year someone will produce One-Person Show the Musical! and we can all just call it a day.

THERE GOES MY BARD ON (zing!)
Ooh! Ooh! Great post on The Guardian UK blog. Lyn Gardner discusses the overabundance of Shakespeare. Here are some snippits:

“Shakespeare is our cultural medicine, often nasty but we swallow it all the same because like cod liver oil we think it must be good for us.”
“theatre just offers far too many revivals of the plays that are mind-numbingly dull and staged by directors and companies that have too much reverence, not enough passion and no urgent reason to stage that particular play at this particular moment.”
“Every Shakespeare revival should treat the play as if it was brand new and the ink barely dry on the page, and until that happens and we have worked out how Shakespeare really can be our contemporary in 21st century Britain, maybe we should do him a favour and give him a rest.”

Um…amen. I wonder how often Shakespeare would be done if it weren’t free. Also, spelling “favor” with a U is so freakin’ adorable.
